I am Sri Nimal Padmakumara, Journalist and TV-Radio Presenter in Sri Lanka. I have worked as a media person in many media institutions around 35 years. Now I am doing a web radio here in Sinhalese language. I am writing this article about my experiences in orbs which I have captured by my self.
Orbs are not dust articles or camera tricks. They are absolutely some powers living with human. They may be Gods, or some inhuman positive powers. As a Buddhist I believe the re-birth. After death we have an another life as a god ,human,animal,devil, ghost or some inhuman life. Therefor thousands of spirits are living around us. Gods and goddesses are powerful energy beings who did big merits on donations, precepts and meditations in their past life times. Gods don't like come near to human world or humans. So only they look at us and use mind waves for help us. Lot of times god's thoughts are powerful which means they can create some physical things from their mind. Gods look at people who do merits and use their mind power to help those people's life, which means make easy their works. In Sri Lanka gods & goddesses called as Deviyo.
It is very difficult to get god's attraction within small time such as one day, sometimes two or more months want to wait for get attraction from particular god. However Buddhist people can get their attraction from mind request in every day after worshiping to triple gem. But some people can get their attraction very soon cause of past lives relationship with gods. But we can get their attraction from mainly by giving merit to them.
After my two children went abroad for studies, I started a new life with Buddha's teaching, and avoid eating meat,fish,dry fish or even piece of Maldive fish. Earth Based gods and goddesses are attracted to - sweet odors such as water flowers, sandalwood, jasmine, pichcha, some oils, fruits or clean places such as clean ponds, rivers, big trees, nice gardens, stupa and temples. If you keep such odors, trees or flowers inside home, rooms or garden . So I knew if I do those things , gods will like to our home. Also we kept Buddha worshiping place near our entrance in main hall, tall table with Buddha statue, where we can offer flowers, incense sticks & oil lamp to Lord Buddha. And also I knew in our home is another way to get attractions of gods. If all family members worship to Buddha in this place, then all of them will be attracted by kindly gods.
One day I attended a Pirith ( Pirith is the Sinhala word for paritta (in Pali), which means protection. "It protects one from all directions", is the traditional definition. This is the recitation or chanting of the word of the Buddha.) ceremony which was having very purely, with hundred of lotus flowers. Before the Pirith start , there were special Gatha called Devatha Aradhana (An Invitation for Gods ). Then they started Buddhist chanting. After few hours I tried to snap the table which with hundreds of lotus flowers, and one of my friend also tried to get another photos of that place. This is one picture he has taken and you can see very powerful ' positive spiritual power ' over my forehead

Who can say this was reflected dust particles ? This room was surrounded by the smell of Lotus and Jasmine flowers and incense sticks. Nothing with dust. Lord Buddha say it is wise transfer merits to gods by doing Buddhist merit activities such as : giving alms or medicine, cloths donations to sangha ( Buddhist monks) , help to making temples or rooms for meditative Buddhist monks, doing meditations, observe precepts, teaching dharma, learning dharma, helping to poor people, etc.
Few months later I tried out to invite the Buddhist Gods who were helped in many ways to some difficult times to my life. I cleaned my home and garden and made full of sweet smells around whole area with burning jasmine, rose,lotus and sandal flavored incense sticks. And played Pirith ( Buddhist chanting ) using high power speakers. That was a Poson full moon Poya day. ( the memorable day of introducing Buddhism to Sri Lanka by Arhath Mahinda ). I specially played ' Dhamma Chakka Sutta ' ( the first lecture made by Lord Buddha ) and ' Maha Samaya Sutta' ( the special lecture made by Lord Buddha to Gods ) on that night . And I tried to get some photographs by my digital camera. I took 30-40 snaps, and checked out them. I saw hundreds of Orbs came and gone. Please see those pictures.
Suddenly I saw a special brighten orb appeared in one photo, and I checked it with enlargements. I am sure that was a positive spiritual power, and I was scared. I stopped taking photographs and again checked that spot using my computer. Definitely that was a God. See those snaps.
Who can say this was reflected dust particles ? Some western people are not believe the rebirth or reincarnation, but it will.
After Pirith chanting I checked again this orb by taking another digital snaps. Ooooops... It was on my main entrance, near the Lord Buddha's picture plate. See this..
Many people, Buddhist or otherwise, have snapped pictures, be it in broad daylight or night, of mysterious orbs. With much experimentation and checking of the cameras, they are mostly thought not to be due to camera tricks or errors.
Some Buddhists have even snapped, with the same camera, the “before” and “after” pictures of the same night sky - above where they did mass sharing of spiritual merits after chanting. The “before” pictures are empty of orbs while the “after” ones with plentiful. They also appear in religious places of worship (not just Buddhist ones). Most Buddhists had come across so far believe the orbs are devas (gods, or the Buddhist equivalent of angels) who had come forth to gather in a holy place, or to rejoice in the merits, especially since there is the tradition of inviting the devas to come share the merits( Dewaradhana). Some even say the orbs looked up close resemble Dharma wheels! Not sure if that is a mere coincidence. Even without actual invitation, merits are usually also shared with all beings in general.
Interestingly, most non-Buddhist westerners believe the orbs are ghosts. Now, there is a big world of difference between gods and ghosts (or rather, wandering spirits). Yes, maybe. Ghosts or gods, they are welcomed to partake of the merits we universally share in goodwill. The first are much “well-to-do” while the latter are usually unfortunate and deprived. What is generally agreed though, is that the orbs are manifestations of intelligent beings unseen by the naked eye.

If you read the suttas, you will find records of devas approaching in the cover of night to consult the Buddha for teachings. They are described with brilliant lights... “I have heard that at one time the Blessed One was staying in Savatthi at Jeta's Grove, Anathapindika's monastery. Then a certain deva, in the far extreme of the night, her extreme radiance lighting up the entirety of Jeta's Grove, approached the Blessed One.” (Opening of Maha-Mangala Sutta: Discourse on Blessings) The orbs could also be gods with lesser radiance perhaps?
You can personally witnessed probably similar magnificent lights flashing in the night sky They appeared during the sharing of merits with the recitation of the Maha-Samaya Sutta (Discourse on the Great Meeting of Devas). (Discourse on the Great Meeting of Devas). The Sutta is a detailed formal invitation of devas to partake in the merits offered.
Now, these lights can see on our eyes , are not lightning flashes - they light up the sky in different areas with various shapes and colours silently. Anything like thunder is absent. The ongoing flashes sustain for up to few minutes or more. Some said they could see the shapes of traditional crowns that devas are commonly depicted with.
There was a popular theory that UFOs might be “chariots of the gods”. But if the devas themselves already glow, maybe the lights are the gods .
